Being from Texas, I'm used to ants, roaches, June bugs, squirrels, rabbits, and even snakes (although I've never seen a rattle snake in the wild-and don't want to, thank you very much) but not alligators.
In Florida, people don't think much about an alligator lurking about in a pond or lake unless they get large (whatever large is?). So having one in the pond on the golf course is no big deal. Yeah, right!
Yesterday Dan and Sasha were sitting out behind his parents house (yes, we went from cool, dry Colorado to hot, humid Florida to help with Dan's ailing parents), we saw the eyes of an alligator in the pond. At first they were close to the far side of the pond. Slowly, ever so slowly, we realized that they were getting closer. I could almost hear the music from The Twilight Zone as it came nearer!
When an alligator moves in the water, it moves very quietly. The water doesn't show any ripples. It is hard to know that it is moving for sure. I even used my thumb to try to measure the distance between it and the far shore to be certain it was moving.
Then when Sasha started walking around on her leash, it definitely started coming faster! It was riveting but a little scary. When it got close to our side of the shore, it just stayed there for a while. Eventually it disappeared. All of this without a sound from the alligator or the water.
Of course I was relieved that it didn't come out of the water but in a way, it would have been interesting. An adventure I don't need and am glad we didn't have.
